Mauna Kea ~ white mountain ~ so named because it snows on the summit, rises directly above the seafloor 32,696 feet making it the world’s tallest mountain (Mt. Everest reaches 29,035 feet into the atmosphere). The base of Mauna Kea starts about 45 miles out from shore at a depth of 18,900 feet.
